Faith, Freedom, and Our Flag
Visit Southern Accents and you will find that we have over 45,000 square feet filled with architectural antiques and salvaged goods ready and waiting for a new home. Scattered among the many treasures that are available for purchase are a few that we've kept for ourselves. These items are near and dear to our heart, none more so than our giant American flag. The flag, which measures 8' x 12', hangs above our large staircase and is one of the first things you will see when entering our showroom.
While we do not know the exact age of our worn and tattered flag, it bears only 48 stars. The 48th star was added to the American flag in 1912. This design was used until 1960 when the last star was added to signify the addition of the State of Hawaii. SA owner, Garlan Gudger, tells of being at a salvage market in Atlanta. He had seen the flag earlier in the day. That afternoon, as he climbed in his truck, ready to make the journey home, he could not stop thinking about it. It had been a long, tiring day and he did not want to go back inside but there was something about the flag that seemed to speak to him. He simply could not leave without it! The enormous symbol of freedom has had a home in our showroom for about the past 15 years.
We our proud of our heritage and proudly display our American flag. It is a daily, visible reminder for us of the many freedoms that we enjoy. It is also a reminder of the many sacrifices that have been made. This weekend we will be celebrating those freedoms. As we gather with family and friends, we will stop and give thanks for the many ways we have been blessed. We will also remember those who have given their all over the past 239 years to ensure the freedoms that we continue to enjoy.
We wish you all a Happy Independence Day! We will be open Friday from 9am to 5pm and special hours this Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
